Be The OneThe American Legion is leading a nationwide effort — Be the One— to eliminate the stigma related to mental health treatment, and in turn, lower the number of veterans who die by suicide every day. Estimates show 22 veterans are lost to suicide daily.
The American Legion has elevated Be the One to be its primary mission, empowering veterans, servicemembers, their family members and civilians to act appropriately when a veteran may be at risk. |

The American Legion, Department of Alabama proudly welcomes our newly elected Department Commander, James A. Bryant Sr., of Graysville Post 23. Elected on June 27, 2026, during the 108th Department Convention in Montgomery, AL. Commander Bryant brings with him 25 years of dedicated Legion service and a proud legacy of military and family commitment.
A U.S. Army veteran of 24 years and long-serving Legionnaire, Commander Bryant’s Theme, “Making A Difference,” reflects his passion for strengthening our American Legion programs and empowering future generations. His theme, “The Department of Alabama, Making A Difference, calls on all members of The American Legion Family to stand united in our shared mission.
His fundraising focus for the year supports the Alabama Veterans Retreat, honoring all veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other Physical and intellectual disabilities. His way of saying, “Be The One”.
Commander Bryant has been married to the love of his life Felicia Bryant for 40 years, they have 3 kids Ashley, Sophia and James Jr. They have two grandchildren, Ayla and Joaquin. Join us in supporting Commander Bryant as he leads with heart, service, and vision for a stronger American Legion, Department of Alabama.
