The Department of Alabama Scouting Program needs the support of every American Legion Post and Legion Family member. Since 1919, The American Legion has encouraged posts to assist local Scout troops in practical ways, continuing a legacy of mentorship, leadership development, citizenship, and community service.
Why This Matters
Scouting helps prepare youth to become responsible citizens and confident leaders. American Legionnaires, Sons of The American Legion, Riders, Auxiliary members, and Junior members can make a meaningful difference by connecting local youth with mentors, service opportunities, patriotic education, and community support.

How Posts Can Help
- Identify local needs: Talk with nearby Scout units, school systems, churches, youth organizations, and community groups to learn where support is needed most.
- Offer mentorship: Invite veterans and Legion Family members to share leadership, citizenship, flag etiquette, emergency preparedness, and service experiences.
- Support service projects: Encourage Scouts to assist with Memorial Day, Veterans Day, flag placement, wreath ceremonies, food drives, and community cleanups.
- Provide meeting or event space: Consider offering post facilities for Scout meetings, recognition ceremonies, training sessions, or planning events when appropriate.
- Recognize achievement: Celebrate Eagle Scouts, service milestones, and outstanding Scout leaders through post meetings, certificates, public recognition, and scholarship awareness.
- Post Commanders: Please speak with your Legion Family—including SAL detachments, Riders, Auxiliary units, and Juniors—to identify local opportunities for Scouting support. Use available community maps, school contacts, church networks, and youth organization connections to locate communities and Scouting units that could benefit from additional assistance.
