Overview Alabama Yellowhammer Legion College (AYLC) is the highest level of education offered by The American legion Department of Alabama. The course is intended to teach the principles and techniques necessary for effective leadership at all levels of the American Legion Department of Alabama. The successful graduate will possess the education and skills necessary to provide program and command leadership at all levels of the American Legion Department of Alabama.
History In 1944, the NEC, by resolution 138, established the National American Legion College. In May 1998, the NEC, by resolution 30, directed that Departments develop training programs. This followed a White Paper Committee that the Departments should establish a Department American Legion College. In January 2022, the AYLC course was developed with input from the National American Legion College (NALC), NALC Alumni Association Members, Department NALC graduates, and American Legion members throughout the state. This work came to fruition with the inaugural class of AYLC – Class 05-22, conducted from Friday 20 May through Sunday 22 May, 2022, at the Veterans Resource Center in Alabaster, AL. Each year, the curriculum – and the class size – has grown to allow for the AYLC to be a more comprehensive course. This year, AYLC Class 07-24 marks the third iteration of the course that forges the leaders of this great institution.
Mission The Alabama Yellowhammer Legion College was formed to improve the knowledge and appreciation of The Department of Alabama American Legion and teaches the core values and contributions of the organization, its Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, and many subordinate programs.
